A Day Trip Worth the Drive
If there's one place in the Poconos that earns the title of "must visit," it's Jim Thorpe. Nestled in a dramatic river gorge in the Lehigh Valley, this Victorian mountain town is unlike anywhere else in northeastern Pennsylvania — and honestly, unlike most places you'll find anywhere. Known as the "Little Switzerland of America," it's been ranked by Travel + Leisure and USA Today as one of the most picturesque towns in the country for fall foliage, and it earns that reputation in every season. Originally founded in 1818 as Mauch Chunk, the town was a booming coal and railroad hub whose wealthy industrialist class built elaborate Victorian mansions that still line the hillsides today. Renamed Jim Thorpe in 1954 to honor one of the greatest athletes of all time, the town has preserved its gorgeous 19th-century architecture and transformed it into something genuinely alive — independent restaurants, eclectic boutiques, a legendary music venue, award-winning dining, working museums, and outdoor adventure right at the city's doorstep.
A word of practical advice: arrive early. Parking can be tight on weekends, especially in summer and fall. And most shops don't open until noon — so plan a morning hike or train ride, then wander downtown in the afternoon. Also note that many establishments close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so plan your visit Thursday through Monday for the fullest experience.

The best way to get out on Lake Harmony is with this crew. Lake Harmony Watersports offers wakeboarding, water skiing, wake surfing, tubing, kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and pontoon rides — all led by patient, enthusiastic instructors who know how to dial up the thrill for teens while keeping it manageable for little ones (and first-timers). Groups are charged by time, not per person, which makes it a great value for families. Captain Rob in particular gets rave reviews for making every outing a highlight of the trip.
